Small
is Beautiful: the Physical Appearance of the Shih Tzu
The Shih Tzu is a toy dog – and this should say it all. It is
small, it is beautiful and it is extremely eye-catching. The first
thing that will strike you when you see a Shih Tzu is its proud
demeanor. He carries himself as a king. It is always alert and
lively and keeps its head up as if it is demeaning for him to
look down on lesser mortals. You cannot help smiling when you
see a Shih Tzu, and at the same time wanting to pick it up in
a warm hug.
It is very important that you check the veracity of the breed
before you buy it since there has been a lot of indiscriminate
breeding of this dog resulting into ill-tempered dogs as well
as weakness in health. The Shih Tzu are easy to breed because
of their convenient size and availability, hence it might be difficult
to get pure-breeds. You might like to buy only those who have
been registered with a national level kennel club, if you want
to ensure that you have a purebred.
Beautiful Coat
The Shih Tzu is tiny, growing maximum to a height of 11 inches
and will weigh no more than 20 pounds. The body of this dog is
slightly longer than its height making it look majestic. The best
part of this breed is however, its luxuriant, longhaired coat.
Generally, their color is white mixed with brown or any other
color markings. The beautiful long outer coat often looks like
overflowing tresses making these miniatures animals look graceful
beyond words. It is a pleasure to see them at dog shows where
their owners parade them on silk and velvet pillows looking regal
and confident.
Their hair is the most attractive feature of these dogs. At the
same time, this is also the most problematic characteristic of
the breed. They need daily grooming just as you would need to
comb your own hair every day; otherwise, their hair mats and tangles
making it look like a mess. The positive side is that the Shih
Tzu loves grooming and can be very patient during the process.
Often is takes some time to tie up the top knot which prevents
the hair from falling into its eyes – but they seldom flinch or
show impatience.
Unless you have the time and patience for grooming this dog for
about 15 to 20 minutes every day, do not choose this breed, as
the result will make both of you unhappy. Moreover, a neglected
Shih Tzu can become very unhappy and excitable; besides its uncombed
mane of hair can easily become the den of a host of parasites,
which will threaten his and your health as well.
This breed, because of their specific traits, makes excellent
pets for senior citizens. They love baby talk, excessive fussing
and overfeeding. The personality
of the Shih Tzu is evenly matched by the beauty and royal
carriage of this dog.
