  • Knowing How to Administer Emergency Care for your Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu care revolves around grooming generally speaking. This type of breed is quiet and not very naughty so you are not likely to have any great emergencies with your Shih Tzu. The problems that you may encounter would be routine health problems, which could be taken care by medicines or just plain rest.

Emergencies Can Happen Even with the Best Shih Tzu Care Practices

Accidents may result in sudden emergencies and this is where you should be able to intervene fast and decisively. In order to be able to do that, you will need to have a well-equipped first aid kit as standard Shih Tzu care measure – and a keen sense of observation. One aspect of good Shih Tzu care means you spend a lot of time with it. Hence, you will almost immediately know if there is something wrong with your dog.

The standard Shih Tzu care requires that they are groomed daily – hence you will always have the opportunity to check its full body thoroughly. Some indicators of needing emergency care for your Shih Tzu are:

    1. The dog is chewing at a part of the body, or licking continuously - this could indicate a wound, pain or both. How to choose a vet for your Shih Tzu

    2. Sudden or gradual increase in vomiting, diarrhea and its refusal to eat or drink.

    3. Sudden abnormal behavior – such as constant whimpering, growling or moving away when you touch a certain part of the body, refusing to come to you even when you call it, shaking its head without reason, limping, inability to walk in its normal way, sleeping or wanting to sleep continuously.

    4. Bleeding from any part of the body obviously requires emergency care for your Shih Tzu.

    5. Showing too much agitation such as running from one corner to another, snapping, barking, panting hard, and yelping and so on.

The first thing you should do is call your vet and give the description of the problem as you see it. Most likely, the vet will point you to the right problem and tell you what to do next. In case you are - for some reason or other - not able to get in touch with your vet, your first concern is to stabilize the dog; for example try stopping the bleeding by applying pressure if you find it possible, cut the hair around the wound so it is visible, dab a little antiseptic lotion on it, ensure it can breathe, and then rush to your vet.

Behave just as you would behave with your children in any emergency. No matter how well prepared you can be, an emergency will still test your reasoning and power to react. The first thing that you need to keep in mind at all times is that you should keep your cool – panic will worsen the situation for both of you. The second thing is that you should have it seen by a vet as urgently as possible, preferably in a place where proper medical attention can be administered.

Normally speaking you should not experience too many instances of emergency care with your Shih Tzu. As they say, Shih Tzu care is a piece of cake. However, you might be making more trips to the vet as part of caring for your Shih Tzu as he ages.
