Think about the Pros and Cons of Shih Tzu Rescue
Shih Tzu rescue has far more advantages than disadvantages by
any standards. There is so much joy in adopting a Shih Tzu that
it can easily overshadow any inconvenience or flaw. Also what
can be more rewarding than the fact that you have saved a dog’s
life and are planning to give it a home and a lot of love for
the rest of its life?
The Pros of Shih Tzu Rescue
1. You get yourself a ready-made adult dog that is more often
than not trained and easily adaptable to your home. The shelter
volunteers work very hard to have the dog home-ready and almost
always give you a very accurate estimate of their profile so you
know exactly what you are getting.
2. The abandoned Shih Tzu knows it has been rejected and they
are very upset with the shelter conditions. The Shih Tzu behaves
like royalty – shabbiness and anything less than luxuriant conditions
goes against them. Hence, they will usually be more than happy
to be rehabilitated and will adore you for loving it.
3. The adult Shih Tzu is easier to train than a puppy and hence,
it is easier to make the required adaptations with an adult dog
than a puppy. You will also have a very good idea of what temperament
it has and know how to handle it.
4. The Shih Tzu gets along with all other pets in the house –
as a puppy they sometimes become very jealous by any sharing of
attention; when they are adult this trait diminishes a little.
The Cons of Shih Tzu Rescue
1. The Shih Tzu is a longhaired breed and needs a lot of grooming.
The long shinning coat that you usually see at the dog shows and
in pet magazines is the result of a lot of work. You might not
really understand the amount of time that it requires until you
get your Shih Tzu rescue dog.
2. The Shih Tzu loves and needs attention in the same (or maybe
more) proportion as it needs food. Hence, you should be able to
give it a lot of attention and petting. This is not an animal
that will be happy to eat and sleep – he needs to be loved and
talked to all the time.
3. Sometimes, the trauma of the rejection and its experience
in the shelter can prove very damaging to the Shih Tzu dog and
they develop some very peculiar negative behavioral traits. It
may not be possible to allow children, at least those below seven
years of age, around this dog, for a while.
Generally speaking, the Shih Tzu rescue dog would make a great
pet, no matter what type
of Shih Tzu breed it is.
